Why Remote Workers Don't Miss Their Commutes

The recent adjustment to remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly had its challenges. But one thing most of us can agree on is that we don't miss our commutes! The packed trains, the late busses, the miles of traffic... who wants to start or end their day that way?

In our recent survey of over 2000 global employees, we asked some questions about employee commute times, transportation types and how they felt about it. The survey revealed that:

  • 61% of respondents drive to work.
  • 76% are concerned with the impact their commute has on the environment
  • 61% of respondents believe that working from home would reduce their carbon footprint
  • 2/3 of commuters who drive spend 30-90 minutes commuting, with nearly 10% spending over 90 minutes in the car every day.

The overall
average commute time was about 51 minutes per day. That's about 4.5 hours per week, or 200 hours per year! We did some brainstorming on what that time could be spent doing that was more productive, or at the very least, more fun. Saving an average of 51 minutes commuting each day is only one of the benefits our survey identified.
