Country pop is a subgenre of country music and pop music that developed as a result of the country genre's desire to reach a larger, mainstream audience.
Though it's been around since the early 1970s, country pop exploded in the 1990s becoming a force on both country radio and top 40 radio. While some country bands eschewed this turn, many country groups embraced pop music and thus, country pop has become one of the most widely heard genres of music. Country music groups are now even selling out stadiums across the country.
