Used by King Charles as a prison for rebel Parliamentarians in the English Civil War, after 100 years it was closed. Now it has be remodeled and includes apartments, restaurants and an art gallery, but you can still visit the part that remains of the prison on a guided tour.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Port Arthur is where a colonial prison settlement operated. Said to be haunted, it now operates ghost tours at the prison and takes boats out to the Isle of the Dead, where prisoners' remains were buried once they died.

Common prisoners were the norm here; however, many rebellions of British rule were imprisoned and executed here and made it a symbol of Irish nationalism.
