The marathon takes its name from the famous Battle of Marathon. Legend has it that the Greek messenger Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a great Greek victory over the Persians. The standard distance for the event nowadays is 26 miles, 385 yards (42.195 km).
