The 10,000m event involves years of dedication before an athlete can hope to reach Olympic level. Runners have to run many miles a week to train for the race. Famous Olympic winners include Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zátopek and Haile Gebrselassie.

10000 metres. How it works. Runners compete over 25 laps of a 400m track. They make bunched standing starts and can break immediately for the inside.
