Originating in Jamaica in the late 1960s, reggae music has been a powerful vehicle to teach, uplift, and inspire people - especially those from poor neighborhoods in Jamaica. Reggae's influence reaches much further than that, though - many of the best reggae artists are known all over the world are some of the greatest musicians of all time.
Reggae is a distinctive bouncing music that has a catchy beat with an emphasis on bass and percussion. It was formed out of ska, rocksteady and mento.
Also referred to as the Stepping Razor, Peter Tosh was a core member of the reggae trio Wailers. He later went on to have a successful solo music career and was very influential in the Rastafari movement.
Reggae, the unique bouncing music with the sticky beat and the emphasis on percussion and bass, formed out of mento, rocksteady and ska. It has developed into many sub genres and has left an indelible mark on popular music, even influencing the early development of hip hop.
While many may not agree with my selection, these reggae artists have certainly contributed tothe reggae fraternity in a major way and should get the respect they deserve. The music that these artists produced will never die, as the impact made are so great that we are still touched by their lyrics and sounds.
