High Plains Drifter (1973)

Trailer for classic western movie High Plains Drifter, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Dan the Info-man
Eastwood was not quite the "Man With No Name" in this film, this time he was billed as "The Stranger"!

High Plains Drifter

Clint Eastwood's name will always be synonymous with a certain type of Western. A mysterious man rides into town from nowhere, engages in numerous gunfights (and is always outnumbered), then leaves when his job is done. This gritty cowboy film was inspired by Sergio Leone and Don Siegel.

Dan the Info-man
Naturally the small town (Lago) in High Plains Drifter is being threatened by a vicious gang. It takes a strange gunfighter to help them fight back...

Unforgiven (1992)

Trailer for the revisionist Western movie Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Dan the Info-man
Unforgiven was remade in 2013 in Japanese and starred Ken Watanabe as a former samurai.

Unforgiven

Unforgiven was dark, brooding and it featured Eastwood in a role that seemed to be a culmination of all the loners and vengeance-seeking cowboys he had portrayed in the Westerns that contributed to his fame. In this movie, he plays a former gunfighter and murderer having to deal with the demons of his past while trying to make a living as a farmer. A brutal act drags him out of retirement...

Dan the Info-man
Eastwood won a Best Director Oscar for this film. It also starred Gene Hackman (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar), Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

Trailer for The Outlaw Josey Wales, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Dan the Info-man
Another revisionist Western featuring Eastwood, eradicating the defined good and evil ethics of cinema's earliest Westerns.

The Outlaw Josey Wales

More cowboys, more guns, more acts of brutality, more revenge. The American Civil War is the backdrop for this famous Eastwood-directed movie. Clearly comfortable with directing himself in a lead role, this film is another example of Eastwood's deft hand in creating a gritty Western.

Dan the Info-man
A sequel was released in 1986: The Return of Josey Wales. It featured Michael Parks, who also directed it.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

Trailer for Letters from Iwo Jima by Clint Eastwood.

Dan the Info-man
Letters from Iwo Jima is a companion film to another great film directed by Eastwood, Flags of Our Fathers (2006).

Letters from Iwo Jima

Eastwood has proved his directing skill goes beyond the Western genre. Letters from Iwo Jima starred Ken Watanabe as General Tadamichi Kuribayashi and was about the infamous Battle of Iwo Jima (Second World War, 1945), but from a Japanese perspective. It was critically well-received in both the USA and Japan.

Dan the Info-man
Steven Spielberg was one of the producers, and Paul Haggis (director of Crash) co-wrote the story.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Trailer for Million Dollar Baby, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Dan the Info-man
The boxing drama featured Eastwood alongside Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman.

Million Dollar Baby

The moving sports drama in the world of women's boxing was highly successful for Eastwood. He bagged another Oscar for Best Director whilst Hilary Swank won for Best Actress and Morgan Freeman won for Best Supporting Actor. A young waitress rises through the boxing ranks with the help of two veteran trainers.

Dan the Info-man
Million Dollar Baby also won the Best Picture Oscar and Eastwood was even nominated for a Grammy for the soundtrack he created!

Also to be considered...

Pale Rider, Honkytonk Man, The Bridges of Madison County, White Hunter Black Heart, Mystic River, Sully, Heartbreak Ridge, Play Misty for Me, Bronco Billy and A Perfect World are just some of the other impressive movies that featured Clint Eastwood in the director's chair!

Dan the Info-man
Not bad going for a man who was once one of the cast members of the Western TV series, Rawhide!
