This is a list of surf musicians. Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Orange County and other areas of Southern California. It was especially popular from 1961 to 1966, has subsequently been revived and was highly influential on subsequent rock music.
During the early years of rock music, surf bands provided the soundtrack to people's perception of what California was like through bright driving riffs. The best surf bands, at their peak, topped the charts and their catchy tunes remain popular today. The sound remains highly influential on genres like punk, rock and even rockabilly. Surfer music may have seemed light and fun when it came out, but the surf bands' influence can't be understated.
Light harmonies, cool tunes and pumping riffs: The Beach Boys were a big influence on interest in surf, and the perfect soundtrack for endless surf trips through sunshine California. Led by non-surfer by Brian Wilson (the only one in the band who didn't surf!), the band's popularity crossed oceans. Their songs were adopted by Australian and European surfers as anthems.
Taken from the film "A Swingin Affair" released in 1963.
"Misirlou" is a traditional song from the Eastern Mediterranean region. It gained popularity through Dale's surf rock cover.
Criteria: This list strives to give the best representation of the Surf Rock sound, by consideration of impact, influence, popularity, originality and adherence to the original surf rock guitar & harmony sound.
