True Grit

In True Grit, Jeff Bridges tackles the role of Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, a part made famous by John Wayne in the 1969 film based on Charles Portis' novel (1968). A motley crew (consisting of a drunken lawman, a Texas Ranger and a teenage girl) has to track down a murderous outlaw in the dangerous Old West.

Blood Simple

This was the commercial film debut for the Coen brothers, and it is now considered a classic. A tangled dark web involving an affair, an angry husband and a private detective turned hitman. The cinematography was by Barry Sonnenfeld (director of Get Shorty and the Men in Black series).

The Coen brothers have flirted with various genres in their film-making careers. This time, it was a black comedy about a folk singer. Llewyn Davies has to balance real life with trying to make a success with his singing career. It has been called one of the best films of the 21st century.

Dan the Info-man
The popular TV series Fargo is based on this 1996 movie. The Coen brothers are executive producers.

A film about murder and brutal hitmen does not sound like it could be classed as a comedy...but Fargo is. This very dark comedy stars Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief investigating nefarious crimes in the town of Brainerd, Minnesota.

Dan the Info-man
Fargo is in North Dakota - but most of the film was based and shot in Minnesota.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Trailer for No Country for Old Men, movie by the Coen brothers.

Dan the Info-man
The film featured Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson and Kelly McDonald.

No Country for Old Men

A relatively modern take on a Western, featuring typical neo-noir elements that the Coen brothers excel at. An assassin is hired to track down a welder who finds (and takes) millions of dollars at a failed drug deal. Javier Bardem delivers an incredible performance as Anton Chigurh, the man with a penchant for an outdated hairstyle and captive bolt pistol.

Dan the Info-man
No Country for Old Men is frequently cited as the best Coen brothers movie.

So many other great movies...

It was hard not to include films such as The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Miller's Crossing or Raising Arizona here. Other great movies by these talented brothers: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Hail, Caesar!, The Man Who Wasn't There and A Serious Man.

Dan the Info-man
The Coen brothers have been nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won four.
