You need to have tickets for the Washington Memorial, but they are totally free. Make sure you show up early so you get some, as they are limited. You can head off and do other stuff and come back once you have them.

You will be hard-pressed to find a better botanical garden anywhere, especially for free. You'll see medicinal plants, butterfly attractors, ponds, fountains, desert plants, tropical plants and more. There's even an indoor rainforest. Great activity for rainy days as well, as the majority of it is indoors.

The building and reflecting pool are a sight to see. This is one of the most popular spots in DC and you can see why when you visit. Explore the outside of the building, grab a bite to eat across the street in the park and take time to appreciate the engraved quotes from Lincoln inside.

Free to roam, but you can grab a cheap meal while you browse too. If you're staying where you can prepare meals, pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables (and maybe some meats, cheese and bread as well).
