Intro

There was a time when athletes competing in the high jump would attempt to leap using a scissors technique, straddle method or the Western roll. Fortunately, 1968 Olympic gold medal winner Dick Fosbury introduced the Fosbury Flop - a style which now dominates the sport.

High Jump world record by Javier Sotomayor

In 1993, Javier Sotomayor broke the high jump record. He jumped 2.45 m (8 ft 01⁄4 in), which still stands as a world record. Sotomayor of Cuba won an Olympic gold medal and the world title in this event. Brief video of his incredible leap.
